Non-liner editing systems have evolved from technologies that occupied whole room to systems that can know run in modern laptop computers. However the increase of power in computation hasn’t altered the complexity in using the systems to their maximum benefits.
This course sets out to explain the context of non-liner editing, creative and technological obstructions are worked through systematically by following exercises. The exercises cover key aspects of Final Cut Pro, from understanding camera technology – to colouring and finishing an edit.
This course runs in two modes, there is a Easter and Summer schedule which is 4 on contiguous days and a Saturday only schedule which is 5 weeks or 5 days over 5 weeks. The course plan is slightly different for the two modes. The aim of the 4-day intense course is to allow students a period of immersed teaching working individually and in groups. This tends to work well for a short intense burst of learning which allows you to get to grips with the application.
The 5-week mode works well for those people who like to reflect on teaching and how what you learn may fit into the context of any personal projects. That is you may learn something which you want to use in your own work as you do the course.
You will learn:
Day 1:
Learn how to edit and make use of the powerful features of Final Cut Pro. We will work through digital, television and film technologies before taking a hands on approach to interactively working through small editing tasks. You will be introduced to opening Final Cut Pro and navigating the interface before doing overwrite and insert edits, you will learn to mark clips in and out and learn to work with master and sub-clips. At the end of the day you will be given a task to do for the following day.
Day 2:
We continue to edit, using trimming tools and motion properties. You will be adjusting both video and audio and syncing clips to carry a story. A brief discussion on creative editing is used to introduce you to
make better decisions with edits. Again you will be given an exercise to do for the following day
Day 3:
Final Cut Studio is briefly explored with a look at, Compressor, Soundedit Pro, Color and Motion. From here on you are given an exercise, which you will continue to work with over the next few days. We look at work flows with a further exploration of the motion properties, trimming tools and the colour filter.
Day 4:
You will continue to make a creative edit with the knowledge you have gained and more of the application is explored, including working with narrative audio and sound tracks. We look at transitions, graphics in Final Cut Pro and preparing your work for output to various media and broadcast requirements.
